aadhaar card misuse: Prevent Aadhaar misuse by locking your biometrics

To prevent misuse of one’s Aadhaar number, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) provides a mechanism to lock their biometric information such as fingerprints and iris scan.

As per the UIDAI website, “This feature will enable resident to lock and temporarily unlock their biometrics. This is to protect privacy and confidentiality of Resident’s Biometrics Data (includes fingerprint and iris). Locked biometrics ensure the Aadhaar holder will not be able to use their biometrics for authentications. Users of this feature are cautioned to use this facility with care to prevent denial of Authentication services. Registered Mobile Number is essential to avail this service.”

If your mobile number is not registered in your Aadhaar card, you must first update it and then use this service.

Do keep in mind that once the biometric information is locked, no one, including you, can access it for the process of authentication.
